In Reply to: Opinions on crossing two different subspecies....Must Read! posted by Herpeton on January 17, 2003 at 12:01:51:
I won't join the fray here as this issue is hashed out on just about every snake forum every month or so. But I did want to comment on your example -
I was wanting to know some opinions on breeding two different milksnake subspecies together? Example: L.t.sinaloae -X- L.t. nelsoni.
This is an interesting example because there is some real question as to whether these two taxa are even different subspecies.
And whether they actually exist as two subspecies in the wild is one question, but in captivity, I have heard that certain unscrupulous dealers around 10 years ago used to sell less colorful Sinaloan babies as nelsoni (when sinaloans were common but nelsoni were very rare). The rationale was that ugly sinaloans wouldn't sell as well, but if you called them nelsoni, you could sell them for even more than screamer baby sinaloans.
Not all "nelsoni" originated from this deception, but some did and so it brings into question the "purity" of the captive population in the first place.
