I also use "tongs" for feeding, but for different reasons. I actually use a long pair of hemostats (18") which can be purchased for around $20-25 online (try www.tongs.com). They are cheaper and sturdier than tongs and easier to clean/disinfect.

1. it avoids accidental feeding bites. I have a few snakes that lunge blindly (including a group of snakes that are actually blind!) at food, so the hemostats keep my digits/hands/arms out of harms way.

2. it prevents me from getting too much human smell on the rodents, and keeps my hands away from the rodents. My hope is that this will decrease the association between the smell of my hands and food, preventing accidental non-feeding bites (I have a couple of eastern kings that are particularly bad about this!).

3. It makes it a lot easier to jiggle/manipulate F/T food for the picky eater.
