HElp, Lizard throws sand into water dish!!!!

i come home from school and have found twice now that my lizard has somehow scattered a layer of sand into his water dish, there are water marks and pieces of sand stuck to the glass (next to the dish) where it has dried. I dont know how or why he's doin it. HE (maybe she) is a southern fence lizard and has never done this before. Whats goin on, is this bad? how do i stop it?? please respond, thanks
