savanna monitor substrate

The people from whom I bought my savanna monitor used dirt for the coconut shaving dirt in her enclosure. I started out using newspaper for her and then decided to use the shavings as well. I know they fed her in that same enclosure but when catching her crickets it has been getting into her mouth and I am afraid of it becoming compacted in her digestive system. Any advice as to what substrate to use, or whether to stick with the dirt would be much appreciated. Thanks, Ara
