Mine got to the point where he seemed to enjoy being petted and would lay on my stomach while I read. (I think he thought of it as another heat rock) they generally don't like being petted on the head though. mine wouldn't actually gape his mouth at me if I touched his head but he would kinda shy away. they can DEFINATELY become tame though. don't let people scare you away with that reputation of theirs.
