this im not sure of.

i would do it every night. at least every time you feed them anyway.

:3. Would a cactus plant (real) tear or rip its skin? (Israeli sand dune gecko)

yes it probably will, or at least, become inbedded in the skin. some succulents dont have spines, just hairs. these may be better. if not, try using air plants or plastic cacti.
