Also animal tongs (available from midwest) would work fine for such instances. Using a hook is just an easy and faster method of capture, which is no excuse for hooking the animals. These animals may be tough, however the flesh inside of the mouth is soft and obviously no where near as durable as their hide.

:For a 2 foot animal, tongs or a snare pole would work perfectly and humanely. Check out midwest (tongs.com) I'm almost positive they would be happy to make custom sizes for your needs, whether it be longer tongs/snare poles, or thicker tubing for dealing with larger animals. Ropes, monofilament netting, and even large fishing nets are other humane options. Hooks should not even be an option.
