These animals may be tough, however the flesh inside of the mouth is soft and obviously no where near as durable as their hide.
:For a 2 foot animal, tongs or a snare pole would work perfectly and humanely. Check out midwest (tongs.com) I'm almost positive they would be happy to make custom sizes for your needs, whether it be longer tongs/snare poles, or thicker tubing for dealing with larger animals. Ropes, monofilament netting, and even large fishing nets are other humane options. Hooks should not even be an option.
