Maputo (Sapa-AFP): Crocodiles have devoured at least 10 people this year in Mozambique's central Tete province, the local authorities reported Friday.
Villagers in Mutarara district say the crocodiles are "superstitious".
"The magical crocodiles are sent by witches to attack their victims," district administrator Damiao Trinta told the Maputo-based Zambeze newspaper.
People are frequently attacked by the reptiles while taking baths, fishing or fetching water from the Zambezi River, Trinta said. The official said attacks had worsened in the last few years.
Trinta told the newspaper that he had set up a group of well-armed hunters to eliminate the predators "but these men have not started working for fear of reprisals from witches".
There have been reports of similar attacks by crocodiles and lions in various parts of central Mozambique, where belief in witchcraft is prevalent.
