:The musk glands are present in both sexes of all crocodilians. In addition to the location under the jaw, there are also a pair just inside the cloaca. I haven't personally studied them but from what I've read, they are used both as a positive social signal (ie courting activities) and as a negative social signal (ie captured or stressed, possibly as a warning to other crocodilians as well). The difference may be in the quantity of "musk" released. If anyone knows more, please jump in.

::Does the male gator only have the musk glands or both sexes do have them? Does it have anything to do with identifying the sex of the gator? Is the American gators only croc carrying them? I don’t see any glands on my spectacled caiman, dwarf caimans. What do the glands do? Make a scent that scare animals away just like skunk does that or breeding purpose???

::My girlfriend and I will drive to Raleigh, North Carolina tomorrow. I will be visiting the Super Croc (Sarcosuchus imperator) model/skull at the Raleigh museum. I am pretty excited to see Paul Sereno’s discovery. I will post pictures after I have it developed.
