Gators are not fast enough to be able to catch a person. The authorities would say that if that was the case, you were too close. Federal law prevents anyone from killing an alligator unless you are a licensed trapper or hunter (in season). If you have puncture wounds, they may overlook it. If the law was loose enough to allow someone to kill a gator because they *thought* it was dangerous or might charge them, it would be a huge loophole for both the poachers and the paranoid to slaughter alligators.
