i just built my new enclosure completly out of acrylic. Its 6 feet long and 4 feet wide and holds 185 gallons of water, so this is a question that i had to deal with early. I went to the pet store and bought a filter that turns the water 300 gallons per hour, my water was pretty dirty when i put it in, and a day later my water was crystal clear and remains that way now.So basically what im sayin is if you spend the money on a really good filter( cause there not cheap) i found that maintenance is pretty low with my tank other than cleaning some algae off the sides and some poop off the land area
Hope i helped
