Force Feeding

Hello-- I read in an old book that it is possible to force feed young crocodilians by gently opening there jaws from the side, and gently pushing a small bit of food in with a Q-tip or something small a blunt. I was just wondering if this is a misconception, because it doesn't sound very safe for the hatchling. Thanks
