Mollies are better than goldfish. If possible stay away from goldfish.
keep the fish about the same width as the snakes head (the fish's body is the same diameter as the snakes head) and you will never feed it too large a prey item. They can eat larger prey but as a beginner this will help you pick the right size food item.
Usually if you get the garter to take mice keep it on mice as if you switch the food around some garters will try and take only the preferred food item.

:oh i got it,,,well i remmember i posted a message here along time ago about if its ok to feed my garters fish constantly,,,some people told me its ok,,, so im thinking ,,why not feed it fish and give it a mouse every now and then,,,you think thatll work,,,and when feeding goldfish,,(since this is my first fish eating snake) i dont know what the size should be,,,should be big enough to leave a lump or what.
:and btw ,there is a kind of fish called mollies,,they come in black or white,,,are these good to feed my garter?
