Although vagrans may be one of the duller subspecies of thamnophis, your particular specimen isn't ugly at all. I actually think that the lighter colored specimens are kind of attractive. I like being able to see the contrast and patterns. To me, the unattractive ones are the ones that are bordering on being melanistic but not quite. If you want to see a really gorgeous looking wandering garter, then check out the picture in the book The Garter Snakes: Evolution and Ecology.
