Ribbon snake HANDLING very skittish

I have had a ribbon snake for a while now, but he hates to be handled. If he feels anyone in the room he hides. I only see him when I move his covering to check if he is alive. I need advice on how to help him be not as skittish. It makes it very hard to clean his tank with him jumping all over the place (he can jump really well). If any advice can be given, it would be a great help.
