hello ,,new here ,,need some help

hello,,first time here.im thinking of buying a garter.it wont be my first snake so i know a little bout snakes ,but i want to know what should the temp be
and some people say they have to eat frogs every now and then and some people say you dont have to.

personnally id like to feed it fish such as gold fish .
(btw do they eat mollies,excuse the spelling)
if i want to feed it fish ,is it enough cause ?i heard it should eat mice cause it has alot of nutrients.

and what is the best substrate ,,is astroturf good
