I've had this ornery snake "Nibbles"(Thamnophis elegans vagrans)for 7 years now (WC as an adult in CO). Up to this year, the snake had been eating mostly nightcrawlers, goldfish, minnows, and the occasional toad and pinky/fuzzy. I decided to see how he'd like mice. Looks like he does:
I feed Nibbles in a paper bag for two reasons:
1. Keeps him from ingesting substrate (which he sometimes does but is pretty good at working it out the sides of his mouth if he does ingest some while swallowing)
2. I weigh him while in the sack to determine trends in weight gain/loss and because I track how much he eats at each feeding as a percentage of body weight.
Almost done. He now weighs more than ever (avg weight above 5 ounces now) so he'll be nice and fat for hibernation.
