gravel is the worst substrate for any frog, it should be illegal. the greatest substrate is your basic coconut fiber, bought in brick form and rehydrated and expanding in a bucket of water. Water dishes are needed, the horned frog only needs one big enuff for him to sit in, while the toads like to float in a few inches of water. you could have 2 fbts in a 10g tank, or one horned frog in a 15-20 gal. tank. my setups:
horned frog: one juvenile in a 10g tank for now, til he grows more. three inches of coconut bedding, two rubbermaid waterbowls, a few pothos plants.
fbts: 4 toads in 20-gal. tank, on 1 inch substrate, water tray covers over half the tank cuz that's where they spend most time. few hide-logs, rarely if ever used, more useful if placed over-water.
