I've always questioned why they did that, but never really thought about it. Yet now I'm thinking its cause in winter, its colder obviously, and they need to "hibernate" or slow down their metabolic functions so they may turn darker to hide themselves better. Yet as spring and summer come along (mating season) they lighten up to attarct males/females? Its just an observation, it should be looked into though.
