Beginner needs a comparison here...

I am a beginner with lizards, but not necessarily with reptiles (mostly experienced with snakes). A buddy of mine has a beardie, which is a very mellow animal, and a lot of fun to interact with. I would like a lizard that is comparable in temperment to a beardie, but something a little less commonplace. Even if they need a little more work to tame down, that would be fine. Overall though, what are the pros and cons in the comparison between the two lizards? Thank you all very much for any and all replies.
