In Arizona wouldn't that result in roasted head? But I know that Tantilla eats centipedes, and the Centipedes in Arizona grow big, perhaps this is something that keeps the centipedes wary around the juvie ground snake?

:Was that it's head would absorb more heat quicker than the rest of it's body. Since the brain is in the head....

:Plus, black will hold in heat longer...
