I bought a standard hook from midwest (www.tongs.com). After about 2 months of "rough use" it broke. So I modified it. I did this with a 1/4 inch steel rod (hollow). Now my snake hook is almost perfect. I would recommend either spending the 20 or 30 dollars for a regular hook, wait until it breaks and do what I did, or getting a golfing putter and filing it down to make a nice field hook. I have never done the second, but friends say it works well. The reason I like what I did is that I can use it like a field hook, but I can also handle snakes easily with it. Hope this helps a little.
