Don, this weird pattern occurs among alligators in the Marina area down to the South Bay and inland. It is the supposed area of intergradation between the California Alligator Lizard (E. m. multicarinata) and the San Diego ssp (E. m. webbi). If you draw a line inland from the Marina, you come pretty close to Baldwin Hills. It's good to see that there are still reptiles around Baldwin Hills. We used to find some neat Cal Kings there before the dam broke.
