Snake traps are illegal here in CA. I don't know where you are but in general they are not good. Other animals also get trapped and you have to check them every day or else whatever is in them will overheat and die. It's better if you can find some property you can lay out sheets of tin. Lay them in sunny areas over rodent colony burrows and the snakes will find them and use them to thermoregulate. They can come and go as they please, if it's too hot they can go down the rodent holes. After a few rains they will start to season and you will begin to see snakes under them. I've seen 14 gophersnakes, 1 california king and 1 ringneck in the last week under the tins around here.
