You don't have to make a screen top, as long as you make a lot of holes on the top and on the sieds to allow proper ventilation and allow moisture to escape. Pine has more of a woodsy smell and will cover up the odor better, but aspen doesn't have any oils like pine, which is said to cause respiratory problems in mice. I keep my reptiles on shredded Aspen and my mice on pine shavings to cover up the smell. Aspen is more expensive but Pine you can get 7 cubic feet for 5 bucks.

:If i use a large tupperware container do i have to cut out the top and put a screen in? Or can i burn holes with ice pick? PINE OR ASPEN?
