...and they climb up and walk around the edge all day long. When they are as crowded as that one, the rat wrestling can get quite "spirited." Leaving the top off gives the students a better view, and keeps them from running over to get a better look.
But since I only have a few tubs, I just cut out a large hole in the middle of it and hot glued hardware cloth on top. Not pretty, but it works. If I did more of this, I would make the wood framed hardware cloth tops others here have posted pics of. I left the ones for the mice open. The hole is only the middle third, and they are too short to get out. I haven't added food hoppers yet, and probably will next fall. I'll have to finish covering the mice tubs then.
If you already have the ten gallon tanks, by all means, use them. If you are going to have to buy them, at $8-10 apiece, tubs that are bigger (and lighter weight, and easier to clean, and unbreakable) are only $4 at WalMart.
