none of my mom's have ever bitten me and I check on and handle the babies as soon as they start to show color and pattern. None of the babies have ever bitten me either. Usually they will nip, or sort of take my finger in their mouth, but never anything painful. I have lucked out with the one's I've purchased too. All have een very nice! Many of them actually lick me!

I would still advise using caution but rats are pretty social and pretty smart. I think if you are uncomfortable around them they may be more likely to try something. Also, new moms can be protective so I alway am a little more careful with a new mother. I usually start out handling the babies when mom is eating, drinking, or otherwise taking a break from her duties. Once they know you aren't going to hurt the babies they usually allow you to check them freely.
