In Reply to: Largest species of rat Availible for feeders? posted by Sirrus on April 15, 2003 at 18:28:12:

every rat that people breed is descended from 2 seperate sub species of animals..

the first is the Rattus norvegicus commonly known as the Norway Rat..

the second is the Rattus Rattus.. commonly known as the Black Rat.. the black rat has a longer tail than the Norway, sleeker body, and generally are smaller overall than a norway..

however thru years and years of captive breeding, you couldnt tell for certain which is which in your collection.. they are just RATS at this point.. no distinguished lineage..

hope i answered the question

best of luck
