I usually do not use any substrate with crickets. So I usually pick out all the big things like uneaten food and potatoes and such. Then I use a large clear trash bag and dump everything into that. I clean out the cage, add new egg cartons. Then, hold the trash bag of cricks by the end and over the cage and slowly let them crawl out in the cage. Slow and easy does it cuz you don't want to get any "crap" back into the cage. Then when most of them are out, search through the debris for stranglers and youre done! ...'til the next cleaning!
