I use rabbit pellets for about a dozen breeders...and various numbers of young. I put 1/2-3/4" of it in the tubs or cages and it absorbs well for weekly changes. And here it is 50# for $8.
Rats can be sensitive to respiratory things and so dusty or woody beddings can bother them. Even so many use simple shavings. I don't as much due to the health of my rodents as my own allergies and smell control.
