BUDAPEST SUN (Hungary) 06 May 99 Nature prize
A program to save the yellow-and-black-spotted land salamander has won the Hungarian first prize and got through to the international round of the Henry Ford European Conservation Award.
The annual prize, first given in 1983, supports working projects in the field of natural conservation and cultural heritage.
The winning project by the Toad Action Group, led by Miklós Puky, aims to help the most endangered vertebrate species of Europe, the salamander, to survive. The project was given Ft1 million ($4,300) along with the reward. The salamander project will be one of 34 entrants competing for the European prize, to be given on June 14.
