Yes, it's legal to go catch gilas...provided you are licensed to catch gilas, specifically. Back in 1970 & 1971 when I was doing fieldwork in AZ, it wasn't particularly difficult for me to obtain a Special collecting permit to catch the three rattlesnakes plus a gila. I'd guess that if you have a good reason to catch a gila, they'll give you a permit. Ask, they won't cut your head off!
