scientific definition of "shedding"

My 11 year old son is doing a visual science experiment. He has to include a scientific definition. He wants to use the last two sheds from his baby corn snake to demonstrate that when fed 3 pinkies per week his corn snake grew 5" in the 8 weeks between sheds. Can anyone help us out with a scientific definition of a snake shedding or direct us to a resource? Many thanks!
