happen to me. While teaching at a an environmental education center, we had 300+ 5th grade students along with about 40 of their parents stay for 2 nights to go through our program. After my first evening program about "critters", I returned them all to our locked wildlife room for the night. The next day, due to rain, I did another program "reptiles" inside the wildlife building. After they left the following morning, I discovered that someone had broken into the wildlife room and removed, of all things, scorpions!!! ( I guess they didn't care for snakes)
While I agree about the liability issues, there is also a reasonable expectation of safety proceedures to follow, and someone physically breaking in to a building, or even trespassing, or even entering a school classroom when they have no permission to do so, puts the liability on them.
And finally, not to laugh....but was one of your lizards a western fence lizard.....(fence a fence lizard???)

: Last year, I had our clever school maintenance guy craft locks for my terrarium. This year, I had a new screen top AND he was out on a long-term disability. Bad combination. Thus, the new top did not have the benefit of his expertise, and I was waiting for him to come back to help me out. Meanwhile, Friday the tank is going into the 3rd floor unheated bookroom to brumate the lizards. Also, I called all the school-area pet shops to be on the alert for any kids attempting to fence certain lizards, which I took care to describe. All of the pet shops were very sympathetic and told me they would (and I didn't even ask them to do this) attempt to get the name of any kid who might come in trying to sell or trade lizards such as I described.
: Since the school doesn't reimburse me one red cent for creating and maintaining these terraria, I am not about to invest in the very expensive Neodesha cages for the ungrateful admin. Last year, two lizard terraria and one aquarium were maintained in that room without incident. It was just rotten luck that our maintenance man with the golden hands has been out, or I believe this never would have happened. Heaven help the kid if I find out who it is--I WILL press charges.
