I'm trying to get the use of program animals up & running at my urban refuge so we can show the kids (& adults :) ) actual animals rather than stuffed mounts--they become a lot more sympathetic that way as I'm sure everyone here knows. The problem I'm running up against is CO law vs my ethics. It's illegal to sell native herps in the state but I really don't want to capture snakes out of the wild when captive bred are available. Has anyone else run into this problem? How did you get around it? I've already contacted a herp rescue group in state. I was wondering about look-alike subspecies. Is there something that looks like a plains garter but isn't? or bullsnake? or western hognose?
