Won't completely prevent burn outs (i mean we still tend to splash water on them, use incorrect fixtures etc etc
The vasaline does melt a bit- but just use a thin layer. The idea of ht evasaline is it helps get a even connection and prevents rusting/corroding in high humidity conditions (i also know a few photographers who install their huge flash lamps using the above guidlines- i learned this in photograhpy class- never though bout using it for reptile bulbs!)
