If you are just getting into snakes, I would suggest that you begin with species that are more managable - corn snakes, king snakes, house snakes. Most cities in the DFW area prohibit private ownership of large boids and any and all venomous species.
The species I suggested generally do not exceed 4 feet in length and are much easier to deal with than an animal that will exceed 10 feet in short order. I would also like to suggest that perhaps you attend/join a herp society (Dallas-Fort Worth, North Texas, or East Texas Regional - the 1st two are held within the DFW area and the 3rd is in Tyler).
