If you are just getting into snakes, I would suggest that you begin with species that are more managable - corn snakes, king snakes, house snakes. Most cities in the DFW area prohibit private ownership of large boids and any and all venomous species.

The species I suggested generally do not exceed 4 feet in length and are much easier to deal with than an animal that will exceed 10 feet in short order. I would also like to suggest that perhaps you attend/join a herp society (Dallas-Fort Worth, North Texas, or East Texas Regional - the 1st two are held within the DFW area and the 3rd is in Tyler). The DFWHS is having its monthly meeting tonight. If you'd like more information, email me privately.
