I like the heat tape or the under tank heaters. I started using them long ago when I left town in the winter for a long weekend and came back and my heat lamp was burned out! This seems to happen to them alot!
The heat tape is something that you wire yourself, so if your not sure of your electrical abilities, this might make you nervous (but it is really not hard to wire up). If you are using aquariums, you can just get the UTH. They are the same as the heat tape, only factory sealed.
Both of these heating devices seem to last a long time. You want to make sure that you use either a rheostat or a thermostat...these can get pretty hot.
