Hello Kevin. I agree with everything Carole has mentioned and commend you for planning ahead. I have a couple other suggestions tho. You might want to do some reading up on Desert Iguanas or one of the Uromastyx species. Neither of these lizards exceed 2 feet and the Uros can be extremely colorful. Desert iguanas are not quite so attractive but are entertaining to watch.
