WTOC (Savannah, Georgia) 05 March 03 Claxton Rattlesnake Roundup Preview (Dal Cannady)
Snakes, snakes, and snakes. The creepy crawlers help make this Evans County's biggest weekend of the year. The annual Rattlesnake Roundup is just days away. Organizers say the second time around in their new building will be much easier.
"There wasn't as much setup to do, getting everything coordinated," Wayne Bradley of the Evans County Wildlife Club said. "It worked better for us."
Organizers say the only change this year is the direction of the parade. It will flow east this year and take traffic problems away from the Wildlife building. Other than that, expect more of the same.
"We're going to have more entertainment this year. We have singers, cloggers," Bradley said. "On Sunday, we'll have gospel music for everybody."
One weekend a year, the small county doubles its size with visitors. The chamber of commerce's Patia Johnson told us, "23,000 people are expected here this weekend and they'll be shopping, buying gas, staying in hotels. So it's a big opportunity economically as well."
One of the newer attractions is the turkey-calling championship with money and national rankings on the line. Bradley says the snake hunt started to keep a supply of antidote in case anyone is bitten and the show has gotten bigger every year. All the fun starts when the gate opens at 8am Saturday morning and 10am on Sunday. The parade begins at 10am Saturday morning, and you can catch all the action right here live on WTOC.
