From my reaction to the bite and the fact that the swelling had slowed/halted at the time they were administering the AV i would say that i probably could have done ok without. I opted to go with the AV for 3 reasons.....the conditions under which i was bitten were not ideal (ie: the strenuous hike out and the fact that i pumped the venom all over the place fast enough that i was numb and tingly all over and rubbery in 10 minutes), the fact that the snake held on and bit repeatedly meaning that i probably got a good portion of his capable yeild, and 3 that i had no reaction at all to the subcutaneous AV test i was given and the treatment with 5 vials didnt seem too overboard.
I do feel the helicopter ride was excessive in the emergency sence however i believe they flew me more because the drive to kaiser would have taken 2 hours and it is a small town with very few ambulances to spare for a 4 hour round trip delivery.
