:Hooks hands-down. While it certainly depends on bit on the species of snake you are trying to capture, I know of no domestic species that is difficult to catch without tongs. As some of the previous posters have mentioned, double-hooking often works with squirmy specimens.

:As far as the quality of tongs goes, my choice are the Midwest GGs. They are of exceptional high quality, and their design keeps both snake and handler safe from injury, thereby making this tool highly practical for even non-herpers, such as ranchers, farmers, animal control, etc. An experienced herper will probably not need tongs for any domestic species or domestic field work.
