I guess I really didn't totally answer your question.

He also might not be wanting to eat much because it is breeding season still.

I would continue to try to feed it f/t, but at greater intervals. If it doesn't eat for a long time (~2 months) I would try a live mouse/rat, but stick with the f/t for now. He probably just isn't hungry yet and will eat again in a week or so.
