Carriers of genes that dont show (hets, or heterozygous) don't necessarily, and usually DO NOT show any of that "hidden" trait.
Thus,you can't normally tell what genes an animal is carrying by the looks of it. (with several exceptions. Hypomelanism is not generally considered a trait that "shows" at all, but it has been hotly debated.
