The talk about it causing respiratory problems is a load of poo-poo.
The only problem I've had with it comes from its ability to retain moisture. In an aquarium with a mesh lid providing good aeration, I dont think this would be any problem at all, but in a plastic container with relatively few holes ( which raises the humidity drastically), this can be a big problem.
See, when aspen stays wet too long, it's a great medium for molds to form upon. Molds can cause respiratory problems, but more importantly, can cause skin problems for the animals that live on/in the bedding.
Personally, I've switched to newspaper as a substrate in my plastic containers, but use either care-fresh or aspen in aquariums.
