I cannot talk about animals in habitat but here in "The Pen" I have noticed that at least one baby will come out early ( at least in the past before the cats moved in!!) and either be impacted & die or maybe eat "too early" & die. This happens in late Feb when temps will go way up & then way down here. Even in early March it is too cool for DI's to prosper. The "dumas" that comes out early dies( with a belly full), the smart ones that stay under till March make it. The adults always came out in mid-late March ( or later)--- temps would hold steady enough that they could digest what they ate. This might happen in habitat but still--- we have many more cloudy days here which has to make a difference. I learned to accept the fact that not all babies were going to survive but still around 85 % did fine.

Good luck with my babies!!!!

David
