There are risks either way, but consider that a local pet shop may not have good info on cham care and have no idea what they are buying either. Most "general" pet shops are clueless about chams and by the time you actually buy it there could be health problems. But, if you build a good relationship with a quality specialty shop whose animals are usually in good shape, kept properly, staff is knowledgeable, they guarrantee health, have the better supplies (like humidity gauges, screen cages, UVB lighting, thermometers with remote probes, MinerAll and RepCal dusts) maybe they can order you a cham instead. To me price is not the most important thing and with chams you usually get what you pay for. I will pay more for a well bred cham from a smaller specialist breeder who guarrantees health (for some period of time), who is easy to reach with questions, and who asks YOU about your setup before selling you something. There are a lot of breeders out there. I would spend some time talking to them in person or email to find out how interested they are in your future care. A good breeder will care what happens to their babies that they've invested a lot into producing. One "online" breeder I have great faith in is Kammerflage Kreations.
