With common names, I think that there are more than one plant refferred to as an umbrella tree. What you probably have is Schefflera arboricola. If so, it's safe.

In my experience, this is a pretty hardy plant that will grow under a lot of conditions. You might be right about the overwatering, however, they don't mind having the leaves misted twice a day - this won't get the soil very wet. Just make sure that your dripper doesn't drain directly onto the soil.

The one that I have thrives in the chameleon cage.
