It's best and easiest to keep your crix in a bare tub. Lack of adequate ventilation is causing the smell to concentrate. Lindsay gave some good advice. Try replacing part of the lid with screen. I also have holes in the side of the tub, 4" diameter circles that I covered with screen, I keep 7000 crix like this and only have to clean the tubs twice a week. No bedding in the tubs make them lots easier to clean and pine bedding will kill your crix, pine oils are toxic. Keep in mind that some of the pine dust will also cling to the crix and then be ingested by your chams.

To clean bare bottom tubs just tip the tub so that one end is higher, sweep all the crix and dirt to the low end and put your egg crates on the high end, wait 30 minutes and remove the dirt. It helps to also add fresh crix food to the high end. Once a week clean your tubs thoroughly with a bleach solution let air dry till no bleach smell is evident and return your remaining crix.
