I have found a VERY dark coral snake......why so dark?

I was out mountain biking & came across the darkest & biggest coral snake I have ever seen. I could barely make out the red bands which were very obvious on his underside. Is this because it may have been an old snake? It was almost dead with what looked like 2 talon marks from a bird near it's tail. I measured it & he is 44 1/2 long. Why so dark? All others I've seen in this part of FL(Spring Hill) are vibrant. I can e-mail a picture if needed. Thank you. Terri C. TerriBerri69@aol for the pic if needed.
